A non-auditioned choir that started out singing for the joy of it — and ended up making an album.
Horizons is a friendly SATB choir of 48 voices that meets on Monday evenings in Bath. There’s no audition to join — just a love of singing and a willingness to commit to a term. Over the years the choir has grown from a community group into an ensemble confident enough to record its own album, sing in Venice and Barcelona, and perform across the South West.
You’ll need to sing in tune; reading music helps but isn’t required if you’re willing to learn your part. Currently spaces for basses — though if a soprano, alto or tenor brings a bass partner, both can come!
Their album
Twelve songs written by Matt and recorded by the choir in Prior Park Chapel — out now on Spotify and Apple Music, with the story behind it on the album page.
A typical Monday
A relaxed vocal warm-up to get everyone listening and breathing as one.
Soprano, alto, tenor and bass lines taught by ear and from the score — with the ChoirMate app and tracks to practise at home.
The magic moment — all four parts in harmony, building towards the next concert.
Code of conduct
Eight things every member signs up to — the short version of a happy choir.
If you are unwell, let Matt know and stay home — protect the people you sing next to.
Support and respect the leadership of the choir director, and all other members, at all times.
No negative, offensive, insulting, discriminatory or aggressive behaviour.
Please don’t arrive intoxicated at rehearsals or performances.
Aim for at least 80% of rehearsals per term, barring extenuating circumstances.
Learn your notes at home with the materials provided, so rehearsals are about blending, shaping and dynamics.
Men: dinner jacket with royal blue shirt. Women: black dress with royal blue accessories.
The musical director’s decision is final.
New singers are always welcome on a Monday — come along for a taster and see how it feels. Tickets for concerts are on TicketSource.
